PURPOSE

The purpose of this blog is to document our UFC 107 experience to the fullest. Hundreds of pictures were taken, and I didn't want to overload our family blog with content that some may not prefer to see. I spent many hours working on this when I probably should have been doing many other more productive things. Parts of it are a bit lengthy, but it was important to me to be descriptive so that we will forever be able to reminisce these amazing memories.

Remember that you have to start reading the posts in order starting with the very first
entry to get the full understanding of our ultimate fighting adventure.

UFC 107 - AUTOGRAPH SIGNINGS
UFC 107 - WEIGH-INS
UFC 107 - THE FORTUNE OF FOLLOWING DANA ON TWITTER
UFC 107 - THE NIGHT OF THE FIGHTS

I hope you enjoy it...Or at least appreciate the effort :)

UFC 107 - SWEET SLIDE SHOW

It took a very long time to upload, but I put together a slide show of the majority of the photos from the autograph signings,
weigh-ins, and the fights. It's set to music, so either turn up or turn down your volume according to your personal preference.

UFC 107 - THE NIGHT OF THE FIGHTS

It seemed like we were traveling in the darkness for hours and hours and hours. Finally, we emerged out of the middle of nothing and saw the lights of Memphis. Once we were in Memphis it felt like every lame driver was trying to slow us down from crossing the big city to reach our destiny. Move, people! It took some searching to find an open lot to park in, but after an hour and a half, the drive was complete at last. Okay, it's nothing like trying to navigate through the chaos of Dallas, but it was agonizing enough in the situation.

Nathan left the tickets for us at the will call window. Since we didn't get there until a couple of hours after the preliminary fights started, we didn't have to deal with wading through a crowd of fools like Nathan did. The walk in the cold and drizzling rain was enough frustration for me. Not to mention I was hauling Brooke's Hannah Montana backpack. It was stuffed with several things to keep her completely content and occupied, except for her Nintendo DS that I left at home charging on the floor. Doh!
Time to grab the priceless tickets at long last and find our seats as quickly as possible. A journey through the halls, up a private stairway, a turn into a private section and...WOW! Are you kidding me?! The seats were amazing! They were on the first deck and smack dab in the middle of the club level (the green section).
Wider, fully cushioned, comfy seats with lots of leg room. Perfect view of the center court jumbo tron. These tickets seriously had to cost a pretty penny for the average spectator. The lobby was very classy with private bathrooms and upscale bars and concession areas. It felt like you were walking though a fancy corporate office. Not the norm for us. We're pretty cool people, but not fancy by any means. The sections below us were the roll in riser style, and the floor seats looked like upgraded folding chairs. Granted, those seats put you closer to the stars and the action, but I think ours were much better than any of those in terms of comfort and visibility of the fights and the screens.
It almost felt unreal to step out and see the whole arena glowing and transformed in true UFC form...
A definite thing of beauty in our eyes.
Everything is lit up so cool until the fight starts. Then the majority of the lights go dark and the spotlights shine down on the ring.
I'm sure that seriously turns up the heat a notch on the pressure cooker for the fighters.
It was strange how quiet the whole place was once the fight was going. I guess everybody was so focused on capturing every moment. No commentators to add to the excitement or possibly increase the annoyance level. No offense Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan, but you are reeeally annoying sometimes. Can't blame you for doing your job though.
I would like to take a moment to point out that while Cole has on a One More Round shirt, it is in no way, shape, or form in support of Matt Hughes. Seriously can't stand the guy or his game. It's rare to find an MMA shirt for kids in stores, so I took what I could get.
Plus, it was on sale since it was being weeded out...Kind of like Matt Hughes. :)
Our friends, Rachel and Justin, looove Matt Hughes for some ridiculous reason.
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one in order to keep the peace.
Chuck Liddell and Dana White sitting ring side chatting about Elvis Presley's estate at Graceland...I think.
Nathan was able to see every single prelim fight, but the rest of us managed
to make it there just in time for the Matt Wiman fight. Whew!
Look how sweet Brooke is just coloring a pretty princess with no care whatsoever of what is going on.
She also split her time playing with Barbies. Gotta love those things. As Mike Goldberg would say...Here's the veteran voice of the octagon, Bruce Buffer!
YES!!!
Alan Belcher will probably never get as much applause as he did tonight being the closest to hometown dude and all.
I wonder if he sent Rampage a thank you note for that one. By the way, did you see his arm tattoo?
It's probably sentimental but it really creeps me out.
Is it just me or does that guy on the left look exactly like Stefan Struve? Weird.
Clay Guida and Kenny Florian
Thanks Clay for getting us all pumped up with your entrance and then just letting it "Flo" all over your face.
My 7 year old son cheered his heart out for you and was almost in tears over the disappointment. This guy really annoys the piss out of me with his not meant to be sleeveless shirts.
Dude, we can tell if you have guns whether you cut them off or not. It does not help you.
It just makes you look stupid to demean a perfectly good $70 shirt.

Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo
Frank, thank you for backing up everything you said this time.
Cheick should have kept his way too shiny glasses on...Cause he sure didn't see that coming!
After the entrance music for Diego Sanchez and BJ Penn ended, Brooke nestled her sweet face on her jacket
and was fast asleep by the time Bruce Buffer finished his roaring introductions.Man, Diego, that face really made us believe that you were gonna "bring it" like you promised.
Evidently, it made BJ believe something incredible was about to happen, too. We were all in shock that BJ shut down "Nightmare" so easily like that. It was heart breaking...Especially because about 30 of Diego's family and friends were sitting behind us.
I think Diego's grandmother was sitting directly behind me. When Herb Dean stopped the fight to look at his cut,
she pleaded to the man above to stop it all and not let Diego get hurt any more. Good call.

Despite the upsetting annihilation of Diego Sanchez, the whole UFC 107 experience was absolutely amazing. If nothing else, this night in itself definitely made the sudden move from Texas to Tennessee all worth it. The likelihood of Dana White ever reading this blog is practically nonexistent, but I want to give a shout out to Dana anyway.

Dana, we cannot thank you enough for being so generous to the fans and for giving us the opportunity to experience a mere glimpse of the UFC world that we love so much. We appreciate it so much more than you will never know. Our 7 year old son said that our family made history tonight. He's absolutely right because the memories of UFC 107 will never be forgotten. Thank you for all that you do! Dana White...You most definitely made our night!

UFC 107 - THE FORTUNE OF FOLLOWING DANA ON TWITTER

Nathan has been following Dana on Twitter for quite a while and noticed a few fights back that Dana would post a message that he had a certain amount of tickets to hand out to those who found him first. Usually the clues were sent out the day before the fights. Nathan had been saying for weeks that if he saw any message about giving out tickets that he would mad dash to Memphis right then and there.

The hours following Nathan's return from the weigh-ins seemed to be a little bitter sweet. For me, I thought it was super sweet that he got to go and had such a good time, but I was slightly bitter that I didn't get to enjoy it, too. Nathan was kind of bummed that he left Memphis without at least trying to get tickets, but he kept a close eye on Dana White's Twitter anyway.

Saturday came and there were still no "tweets" about tickets. Nathan took Cole to karate, we had lunch, and then the kids ran off to play in their rooms. It was actually out of the ordinary for the kids to be so quiet while Nathan was home. We were watching something on TV, but Nathan couldn't stop staring at his stupid phone long enough to pay attention to anything. He has automatic alerts on his phone for all kinds of things (sports scores, emails, facebook, twitter, etc).

After many alerts of football updates, the Dana White ticket tweet he'd been waiting for finally came across at 3:28 p.m. Nathan perked up so quickly that he nearly pulled a muscle. He asked me if I would be mad if he went to Memphis. I said I would be a little bit because he needed to spend time with the kids, but I knew how badly he wanted to go. He sat there on the couch and I could tell he was trying to decide if me being aggravated with him going was worth it or not. I told him to go. He still sat there because he knew it would be a long shot since Memphis was an hour away. I could tell his mind was spinning on what to do. Once I again, I told him to go. Boy, he jumped up and ran out the door like he'd just stolen something. Uhhhh, okay.

Nathan figured Dana would be at the nicer mall in Memphis so he headed straight to it. It normally takes an hour, but he made it to Memphis in 40 minutes. Just as he was pulling into the Wolfchase parking lot another tweet came across, and that's exactly where Dana was. Nathan ran into the mall and started sprinting all through the crowd of holiday shoppers. A few other people were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, too. They realized that they were all looking for Dana and chose to split up to try and find him faster. Finally, this guy got a call from his wife that she found him in a sports memorabilia store. Nathan and that guy ran down there and then were in absolute shock at the mere sight of Dana White.Dana White, President of the UFC
Nathan briefly stood in line, shook Dana White's hand, and then took a picture with him.
UN-BE-LIEVABLE!!!
Dana looks more excited to be in the picture than Nathan. He is simply awesome to the fans.
We don't care what anybody says...He is so stinkin' cool!!!

After the picture Nathan asked Dana if he had any more tickets to the fights. Dana asked him if he followed his Twitter. Of course, Nathan said yes and Dana asked him how many tickets he wanted. He had 35 left and Nathan asked if 6 was okay. They ended up giving him 8 though so they wouldn't have to split up seats. That'll do!
Nathan stayed there in the store for a few minutes just stare-bearing
Dana White in near disbelief of what just happened. Then he called me...

I quickly gathered from his ramblings that he met Dana White and got tickets. He was freaking out and huffing and puffing so heavily that it sounded like he was having a heart attack. I was so happy for him but disappointed at the same time. I knew I couldn't go because we don't have anyone here to watch the kids. We had already planned to go over to Justin's house to watch the fights but Justin would now for sure be watching the fights live. So that meant that I wasn't going to get to see the fights at all. Suck. Nathan then called Justin, who refused to believe Nathan until he sent pictures of Dana and the tickets, and started trying to figure out who all to give the remaining tickets to.

Justin's wife, Rachel, sent me a text about how cool this was and such. I immediately called her and before I could even finish considering asking her to watch the kids, she said she was all excited and trying to hurry to get ready and pass off their kids. What?!
I suggested bringing all of our kids and said I would deal with them if they needed to go to the bathroom or something. No deal. We hung up and my brain was scrambling to try and figure out a way to get to go, too.

Brooke was playing with her Barbies and I casually told her where Nathan was and what all had transpired. I may have exaggerated the excitement a wee bit...I forget. Much to my surprise she said that she wanted to go and see someone get their teeth knocked out. What?! Did my 6 year old little girl really just say that?! She normally gets so annoyed when the fights are on. It had to be fate. YES!!!!!!!!

Brooke ran into Cole's room and told him Daddy met Dana White (even though she has no clue who he is). Cole seriously started flipping out. He may only be 7 years old but he DOES know who that is. Then she announced that we were all going to Memphis to watch the fights. Oh my gosh, his excitement was through the roof. I called Nathan and he immediately started babbling about everything out there. I just cut him off and said that Brooke wanted to go. He was just as shocked as I was. I had to sit down because my legs were shaking with anticipation. Although, it may have been due to the fact that I was still thawing out from being in the 30 degree temps for a half hour working on the Christmas lights. Who knows.

Nathan quickly worked out a game plan to get us there while I scrambled to get us all ready. I crammed some toys into Brooke's backpack and before I knew it, Justin and Rachel were at our front door to pick us up. Sweet! We did a quick drive by at McDonald's and set out for the long, rainy trip to Memphis.

UFC 107 - WEIGH-INS

After the autograph signings, the guys had some time to kill. They went and ate lunch across the street at the super swanky Hooters because "that's all there was." Whatever. They headed back to the Fedex Forum following their agonizing lunch to stand in line again for the weigh-ins. They waited an hour in the cold to get into the building, and then another hour inside the arena before it all started. I'm sure I would've gotten really annoyed with standing for ridiculous amounts of time, but I really wish I could have gone. I sadly settled for the normal living room viewing since I had to stick to my motherly duties and pick up the kids from school. That's alright though because it's always really cute to find out what trinket Brooke chose on treasure box day...Friday.
The big screens showed the entire Countdown...As if everyone there hadn't already watched it.
The purpose of passing the time was accomplished though.
That's Clay Guida's mom in the pink shirt. Or maybe it was just a lady wearing a shirt that says "Guida's Mom".
The proverbial scale of judgment.
Rarely do the fighters have to bare all to try to make weight, but on this particular day there were shockingly five guys who
had to do so. I think they all gave the deer in the headlights look before the raising of the towel. Blame it on Memphis boys.
All of the pictures Nathan took turned out pretty good. He didn't get any of Frank Mir though because he was trying to take a video. I couldn't have that at all, so I tried catching a few shots on our tv screen. The next several pictures are what I took. They are pretty sweet if I do say so myself. Since I recorded the weigh-ins, I was able to freeze frame the crowd shots thanks to the DVR. I searched for a while but finally found the guys. Nathan is the one with the white sleeves and the camera in front of his face. Justin is the one in the black shirt and red hat to the left of Nathan that looks like a little kid :)
My goodness, Frank is massive! He really did put on 25 lbs of pure muscle.
Cheick is such a fool. That stunt probably motivated Frank even more.
How on earth does Diego make his veins pop out like that? Just look at that bicep...Eeek!
You can just feel the intensity in that stare down. Yesssssssssss!
That makes you want to watch the fights right then and there!

I didn't expect Nathan to get home until later that night because I knew he really wanted to hang out in Memphis
to see if Dana White was going to be giving out free tickets to the fights. Plans changed and it didn't quite work out that way.
Besides that, Nathan said this day was one of the best days of his life...And that's awesome!
